Zero Trust Implementation

Zero Trust security is an approach that verifies every access request explicitly, grants only the access needed and assumes a breach is possible, instead of trusting anything inside the network. Umbrella Tech helps Australian organisations turn those principles into a practical architecture across identity, devices, applications, data and networks, implemented in stages with measurable control improvements.

The problem

The challenge we help you address

A trusted internal network is no longer a sufficient access boundary when staff, suppliers and cloud services connect from many locations. Security decisions need to follow the user, device and resource being accessed.

The outcome

What the engagement should deliver

A Zero Trust implementation should produce measurable control improvements rather than a product label. We agree the target design, implement achievable stages and validate the access paths that matter to your organisation.

How we can help

Architecture

Map important resources, trust boundaries and access paths, and define the target state.

Identity

Enforce multi-factor authentication (MFA) and Conditional Access in Microsoft Entra ID so every sign-in is evaluated.

Devices

Require managed, compliant devices through Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.

Network segmentation

Reduce implicit trust between sites, users and systems, and narrow broad VPN access where appropriate.

Evidence and operation

Establish logging, access reviews and responsibilities for maintaining the design.

What zero trust architecture means in practice

Zero trust architecture is the design that applies these principles. Microsoft describes them as verify explicitly, use least privilege access and assume breach. In practice, each request is checked against the user's identity, the device's health and the sensitivity of the resource; access is narrow and time-limited; and systems are segmented so one compromised account cannot reach everything. It is built in stages, often on platforms you already own, rather than installed as a single product.

Frequently asked questions

Can't see your question? Ask us directly →

What is zero trust security?

It is a security model, not a single product. Zero Trust combines design principles, operating practices and technical controls, and platforms such as Microsoft Entra ID and Microsoft Defender may already support parts of it.

When should a business use it?

When staff, suppliers and cloud services connect from many locations, when a flat network lets one compromised device reach too much, or when you are already investing in identity and device controls and want them to work as one design.

What does implementation include?

A current-state map, a target architecture and a staged plan, then delivery of the agreed stages. Most programmes start with identity, Entra ID & Conditional Access and device compliance before moving to network segmentation.

How long does a project take?

Zero Trust is delivered in stages, and each stage is scoped on its own. Effort depends on the number of applications, sites and devices and on your existing controls; stages and timing are confirmed in discovery.

What are the main security or governance considerations?

Each stage needs an owner, a measure of progress and a plan for exceptions, and logging and access reviews must continue after handover. Frameworks such as ISO/IEC 27001 can use the same controls as evidence, which our Governance & Compliance services help map.
