Microsoft 365 Deployment & Migration

An Office 365 migration, now usually called a Microsoft 365 migration, moves email, files, identities and collaboration from another platform or tenant into a planned Microsoft 365 environment. Umbrella Tech plans and delivers migrations from Google Workspace, on-premises Exchange and file servers, and between Microsoft 365 tenants, with discovery, identity design, staged cutover and validation built into the scope.

The problem

The challenge we help you address

A migration affects more than mailbox data. Permissions, integrations, shared resources and staff working habits all influence whether the target environment is usable after cutover.

The outcome

What the engagement should deliver

The objective is a controlled transition with clear acceptance criteria and an environment your team can operate. We plan for business continuity and explain any source or target limitations before the migration begins.

How we can help

Discovery and readiness

Inventory mailboxes, files, identities, devices and application dependencies.

Identity and tenant design

Prepare Microsoft Entra ID, domains, licences and security baselines before data moves.

Migration execution

Plan pilots, transfer methods, cutover windows and user communications.

Validation and handover

Check agreed data and access outcomes, record exceptions and document the target environment.

Migration scenarios we plan for

A Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 migration moves Gmail, Google Drive and calendars, and needs a plan for shared drives, sharing links and user habits. A tenant to tenant migration, often after a merger or divestment, needs careful handling of domains, identities and coexistence while both tenants are live. Moves from on-premises Exchange or file servers raise questions about hybrid identity and where each type of content should land; file shares often move through our SharePoint Migration service.

How we deliver

How a migration runs

01

Discover

Inventory sources, owners and dependencies, and confirm what will not move.

02

Prepare the target

Configure identity, security and structure in Microsoft 365 before any data arrives.

03

Pilot

Migrate a representative group, fix issues and refine communications.

04

Cut over and support

Move remaining users in planned waves, support them through the first days and close out exceptions.

Frequently asked questions

Can't see your question? Ask us directly →

What is an Office 365 migration?

It is the move of mailboxes, files and collaboration into Microsoft 365, the current name for the suite that grew out of Office 365. A good migration also brings permissions across deliberately, prepares identity and helps people work in the new environment.

When should a business use it?

When moving off Google Workspace, an on-premises mail server or a file server, when consolidating tenants after a merger, or when rebuilding a tenant that was set up without a plan.

Can you support tenant-to-tenant or Google Workspace migrations?

Yes, these scenarios are assessed during discovery. We confirm the source platforms, workloads, identity requirements and supported migration methods before committing to the scope.

How long does a migration take?

It depends on the volume of data, number of users, source platform, network capacity and how many waves the business can absorb. Scope and timing are confirmed in discovery, before cutover dates are set.

What are the main security or governance considerations?

Set up MFA and security baselines in the target before users arrive, avoid copying broad permissions, protect migration accounts and remove their access afterwards. Baselines can be designed with our Microsoft 365 Security service.
