DISP Insights

Planning security readiness for Defence supply-chain work.

The Defence Industry Security Program (DISP) is the Department of Defence's membership program for Australian businesses that need to meet security requirements in Defence work. This topic collects Umbrella Tech's guidance on DISP membership: scoping the work, connecting cybersecurity controls with evidence and coordinating responsibilities, for businesses entering or growing in the Defence supply chain.

2

Clarifying the intended membership and contractual scope

Begin with the Defence work you intend to do, the information you will handle and the relevant contract requirements. Those facts guide preparation and the responsibilities that need coordinating across the business.

3

Connecting cybersecurity controls with evidence

Technical controls should clearly support your information-handling obligations. Record how access, endpoint and network changes were made and what evidence shows they operate.

4

Coordinating technical and organisational responsibilities

Cybersecurity work needs to connect with the people responsible for wider security preparation. Define who owns decisions and evidence so a technical project contributes to the organisation's DISP program as a whole.

Frequently asked questions

What does Umbrella Tech provide for DISP membership?

We help you prepare: a DISP Readiness Assessment to find the gaps, then DISP Cybersecurity Implementation for the ICT controls and evidence. Membership decisions are made by Defence, not by us.

Who is DISP for?

Australian businesses that supply, or want to supply, Defence, including smaller firms working as subcontractors to larger primes. Contracts may require membership at a particular level, so check what your contract or prospective customer asks for. Many DISP cybersecurity controls overlap with the Essential Eight.

What outcomes should a DISP readiness project deliver?

A clear view of what your intended membership level requires, the ICT security controls in place with evidence, and owners for each area of security. The time involved depends on your starting point and the level you need, which we confirm in discovery.
