Business Wi-Fi

Business Wi-Fi is wireless networking designed for the coverage, device numbers and security a workplace needs, rather than a few consumer access points. Umbrella Tech designs and delivers commercial Wi-Fi installation for Australian offices, warehouses and campuses: we survey the site, plan access point placement and capacity, separate staff and guest access, and test coverage before handover.

The problem

The challenge we help you address

Adding more access points rarely fixes slow or patchy wireless. Building materials, interference from neighbouring networks, the number of devices in meeting rooms and how people move around all affect the right design. Guest access on the same network as staff devices adds a security problem to the performance one.

The outcome

What the engagement should deliver

Office Wi-Fi with defined coverage and capacity expectations, separate access for staff, guests and devices, and test results that give your team a clear basis for accepting the installation and planning future changes.

How we can help

Site requirements

Assess work areas, client devices, guest needs, available cabling and switch ports.

Wireless design

Plan access point placement, channels, capacity and separate networks where appropriate.

Access security

Set up authentication for staff and devices, and guest access kept apart from internal systems.

Deployment and checks

Configure the environment, test agreed coverage areas and document administration.

Terms worth knowing

  • Site survey: measuring or modelling how signal travels through your building, so access points go where they are needed.
  • Wi-Fi 6 and later: newer wireless standards that handle many connected devices more efficiently. The benefit depends on client devices supporting them.
  • WPA3 and 802.1X: current Wi-Fi security protocols and a method for authenticating each user or device individually instead of sharing one password.
  • Power over Ethernet (PoE): power for access points delivered over the network cable from the switch. See Switching & Network Infrastructure.
How we deliver

How a Wi-Fi project runs

01

Survey

Walk the site, measure existing signal and record where people and devices work.

02

Design

Plan access point locations, cabling, networks and security settings.

03

Install

Mount, cable and configure access points, usually alongside switch changes.

04

Test

Check coverage and roaming in the agreed areas and record the results.

Proof from a recent installation

For an IT provider's client with office and warehouse areas, we replaced the Wi-Fi access points together with the firewall and switch in one onsite visit, aligned the network name with the client's group standard and tested Wi-Fi with staff. Read the Rosh Tech case study.

Frequently asked questions

Can't see your question? Ask us directly →

What is business Wi-Fi?

Wireless networking designed and managed for a workplace: centrally managed access points, coverage planned for the building, capacity for the number of devices and separate networks for staff, guests and equipment.

When should a business upgrade its Wi-Fi?

When users report dropouts or slow connections in parts of the building, when device numbers grow, after a fit-out or relocation, or when access points are no longer supported.

What does implementation include?

Survey, design, cabling coordination, access point installation and configuration, staff and guest network setup, coverage testing and handover documentation. Staff and guest Wi-Fi can be separated around your security requirements.

How long does a Wi-Fi project take?

It depends on the size and layout of the site, whether new cabling is needed, equipment lead times and access to the building. Scope and timing are confirmed in discovery.

What are the main security or governance considerations?

Individual authentication rather than a shared password where practical, guest access kept away from internal systems, current security protocols and controlled administration of the wireless platform. Our Cybersecurity services can review the wider picture.
